Last weekend, the whole family went to the annual KL International Bookfair at PWTC. There were a lot of visitors, from babies to grannies, from all walks of life. Despite the never-ending dizzy spells, I insisted on going to the fair, with one purpose, to find books and reading materials for me and the kids.
Alhamdulillah, we've found several worth buying academic books. The kids were so happy with the Islamic foundation and Goodwords' books that we bought. We also found the 1Islam production vcds for children, which I have been searching for so long. In short, I think that our visit to KLIBF this year is quite rewarding.
Having said that, I observe that MOST of the visitors to the book fair went out from the venue empty-handed. It means that they buy nothing at the biggest book fair in Malaysia. Should they have bought something, the only reading materials that they bought were magazines and comics! Or they only had a handful of pamphlets and brochures with them as they walked out the book fair. This proves that Malaysians indeed have less interest in reading and buying books.
It is also sad to see scenes of lovey-dovey couple of youngsters who misused this book fair as a place to dating! How could they think that a book fair is a nice and cosy place to date? I guess, going to the book fair is the most approved and sensible reason for them to get permission from their parents to go out and meet their heartthrob.
If Malaysians still have this kind of reading habit and awareness, how could we be a more developed and literate society?
